In 1997 Speakeasy defiantly started making small batches of beer starting with their most iconic beer Prohibition Ale in San Francisco, California. This Amber Ale embodies the bootlegger spirit who saved America when the taps were dry.
They became so popular that in 1999 Big Daddy IPA was added to the beer list and became the bay area’s best selling IPA. This beer still keeps their lights on taking up 40% of the brewery’s sales.
At first Speakeasy opened up on Friday nights for beer lovers, family, and friends but then in 2013 they finally opened up a taproom. They now work with 20 distributors across the west coast and their 15-barrel system was replaced in 2015 in a huge expansion that included a 60 barrel brewhouse, malt handling system, and canning line.
Then in 2017 Speakeasy was acquired by Hunters Point Brewery. Under new ownership Speakeasy is expected to grow even more. Step back into the 20s tomorrow night at Janey’s in Cave Creek when Speakeasy does their tap takeover and until next time Hoppy Travels!
